DNA testing can be confusing
...but let us take the complexity away.

DNA testing can be daunting, and perhaps a bit scary. All sorts of questions arise, like...

  • · Which company is the best?
  • · What am I expected to do?
  • · What are the benefits?
  • · What happens to my DNA?
  • · Is my data safe?

  • All of these are absolutely valid questions, so let's dive right into the process.

    Choosing a Testing Company

There are several companies that offer Genetic DNA tests - all reputable and very good at what they do. Overall, you can use any of these companies. Of these, we recommend the following:

  • 1) AncestryDNA - largest database of test kits (18,000,000+ persons); $69 + $9.95 S/H (U.S.)*
  • 2) 23andMe - second largest database (12,000,000+ persons), offers a variety of health related add-ons; $99 + $9.95 S/H (U.S.)*
  • 3) Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) - smaller database (1,200,000+ persons) than the two above; $79 + $9.95 S/H (U.S.)*

  • * Prices valid as of December 2020; please check the websites above for the most up to date pricing (most offer discounts or sales that will reduce the costs).
  • We also STRONGLY recommend testing with all three (3) companies (combined) above and uploading results to GEDMatch (it's free to join - try it!) for additional matches.

    Taking the Test

Order a test kit (or kits) from your selected company (or companies, as we recommend). In the U.S., the kit will usually arrive within a week. Once you get the kit, it will have specific instructions. Some kits require you to spit into a tube, while others are based on swabbing the inside of your gums or cheeks to capture cells. Some companies will send you two sample kits, one for redundancy - make sure to complete both kits just in case. Once completed, return the kit(s) in the pre-paid envelope (or box). Lastly, the company will extract the DNA fom your sample(s) and performs analysis to produce match results and a raw DNA file.

    Receiving Results

Once your results are ready, the company will notify you by email and/or text message. You can then login to the company's website and see your results. Now, you can browse online trees of the matches to try and locate most recent common ancestor(s) - or MRCA(s) - that could potentially show you how you are related to a person.

Geniserv can assist you through the entire DNA testing process, including securely managing kits of you and your relatives and analysis and mapping of your matches.
